How Quickly they forget

July 11, 2008, 9:59 am

It's been a busy summer - fires, politics, gay marriage, "Weeds" back on TV. But just say the name "Ed Jew" and we're instantly transported back in time a year or so ago to the scandal and disbelief over the former Supervisor's weird disappearing act blown into headlines reminiscent of the Lindbergh kidnapping, and the newsroom heavy breathing typically reserved for only the most epic of scandal.

Mr. Jew's corruption case is worming its way through the legal system. But the restaurant chain at the center of the matter -- Quickly -- is still hovering in purgatory. You recall that one of the charges against Ed was that he tried to extort $80,000 from Quickly to help the chain's stores get permits required of franchise operations in the City.

To this day, Quickly still doesn't have the permits while city officials who survive in Mr. Jew's wake apparently point to red tape, transfer blame or hurl obscenities (what a shock) instead of fixing things. (Appreciation should go to Sarah Phelan at the Bay Guardian for revisiting the whole mess).

While Ed Jew, like Richard Nixon, may have been one of a kind, some of his spirit lives on.
