- Putting together notes for my April 9 – 11, 2010 Autobiography workshop (Esalen). I’m in that “Gathering” stage, reading, sifting, transcribing material from a wide range of sources… some will go into the outline which I plan to share with those attending… other material will be discarded or simply find a place in my journal. - In a piece, a prose poem titled "The Library," Morton Marcus writes, "When I die I will be a book on a shelf in the library, and this notion doesn't bother me. I look forward to leaning against Melville and Montagine, and I can't wait to stand in the ranks..."Saturday we attended Mort's Memorial at Cabrillo College, Aptos, CA, where he taught for 30 years... profound sense of ...

- Because poet Mort Marcus was a friend and ally, someone I've known since I moved to Santa Cruz in 1985, this Santa Cruz Sentinel article by Wallace Baine has special meaning. Most of what I post is original, but now and then something special comes along that I'd like to share... and it touches on the theme of Writers Friendship, the subject of another blog I'm involved with... - Poet Mort Marcus phoned a few days ago fully conscious, fully present... and it was one of those brief, but complete... well, a goodbye conversation, exemplary... actually, Mort did most of the speaking... for my part, all I could think to say was, "O Mort, O Mort! And then those last few words, Mort saying, "I'll be in touch..."

- This is a poem, "One Art," that I seem to have known before, _long_ before I first read it, and foolishly forgot, and then it comes back into my life and it's there again as if it had never not been there. One Art by Elizabeth BishopThe art of losing isn't hard to master;so many things seem filled with the intentto be lost that their loss is no disaster.Lose something every day. ...

- Cover art for UNLEASHED: THE DOGS IN MY LIFE, a book-length celebration of dogs and dogginess. At the heart of the work (still in progress) is the question, What does it mean to be a dog in 21st Century America, 15,000 years after these animals (canis lupus familiaris, a subspecies of the gray woof, Canis lupus) first began to be domesticated? In addition to old favorites (Uncle Dog: The Poet at ...

- How can a book this good go unpublished? Reading a friend’s manuscript. Our poetry group, seven of us, former and current UCSC writing profs, commenting on one another’s work… sometimes individual poems, sometimes a chapbook or book-length project. Under discussion at this time is Charles Atkinson’s new manuscript, a portion of which he plans to enter in a chapbook contest. Though our ...

- Apple Mail crashes -- suddenly unable to send or receive mail. Why? Turns out if you have more than 2,000 emails stored in your Inbox, Apple Mail may balk. I'm excessive... over 4,000 emails, many with little red flags declaring my intention of reading, responding to to to to...And it's taken more than 3 days to get Apple Mail working. In the process I find I _still_ want to hold on to emails ...
