A Rock Cairn on Inis Meain

I just received a very nice note from Leondard Doyle of www.aran-isles.com about my two-part blog piece about researching John Millington Synge on Inis Meain.  Follow the link to see the piece and the rest of the website with its stunning photography and interesting stories.  Best of luck to Mr. Doyle and his group.

travel writers

Hi Robert,

I just thought I would tag your page and ask you to weigh in on the Thomas Kunstamm (if that is spelled correctly) travel writer expose book--I believe it called Do Travel Writers Go to Hell? Any thoughts...?

Smile When You're in Hell

Dear Matt,

Anybody who thinks the travel writing business is any different than any other business is sadly mistaken.  At the rates most writers get paid, it in nearly impossible to make a profit, much less feed a family.  I think many people are seduced by good travel writing into thinking, "yeah, I could go there; I could do that."  But that seems to me part of the fantasy proferred by the best writers.

Another great book on travel writing that has been eclipsed by the Kunstamm kerfluffle is Chuck Thompson's Smile When You Are Lying, which provides another cynical view of travel writing.  Stay tuned to my blog for a review.

Todd

ps.  Thanks for tagging.
