Caroline Kennedy as UN Ambassador?

November 8, 2008, 11:34 am

I saw on one of the news channels this morning that there is talk that Obama is considering the nomination of Caroline Kennedy as our UN Ambassador?  It made me think about what possible qualifications she might have to lead this important post.  According to wikipedia I can’t find any.  It states that she is an attorney, writer, and editor.  If it is true that she is being considered, is it simply due to her last name?  Is it due to her gender?  Or both?

Governor Palin was widely attack, unfairly in my opinion, by may self-purported feminists for not being qualified for the job and for not having foreign policy experience.  It will be interesting to see how these same feminists will react if this happens.  I’ll be monitoring some of the blogs that I usually do to see if and how some of these women react.

There have also been

There have also been whispers of her being appointed UK ambassador, a position once held by her paternal grandfather.

I agree with you that her qualifications seem scant, so I suspect any such appointment would be due to her lineage and her behind-the-scenes work vetting president-elect Obama's running mate.

That said, having lived in countries where the American ambassador was not a career diplomat but a political appointee, I can honestly say some very embarrassing things happen when unqualified people are placed in senior, high profile positions.  Too many of our ambassadors lack intercultural skills, language skills, and even experience living and working abroad.  Surely our country is not lacking more qualified people for these posts.

But she hasn't been offered the job, correct?

I wrote this morning so I haven't seen the shows this morning.

If Obama did offer her a post, it might be for Education (Kennedy has worked with the NYC education system for years) or it could be like her Aunt Jean where she becomes ambassador to Ireland or like her grandfather when he became ambassdor to England.

For her credentials, a degree from Radcliffe is pretty impressive so if she became a UN ambassador, she would be a quick study. Also she has a fifteen year old son so she might not want to take him out of school mid year.
