where the writers are

Being a writer’s husband

April 24, 2009, 10:04 am

I’ve wanted to blog about being a writer’s husband for a while now but have struggled to do it since I feel that my blog entries would end up looking like a to-do list stuck to a fridge with a smiley fridge-magnet or list of single line ‘tweets’ (or ‘twinks’ as I call them) for Twitter. In the end I thought I’d just put down a list of random to-do’s that I try to remember to keep up with. :)

 - Remember to water Gina.

- Make toast for Gina within 10 minutes of her waking.

- Do not speak to her when she has that scrunched up look on her face or has a gormless look with her eyes looking off into the distance. I find the latter very amusing as she is the cleverest person I have ever met.

- Do not speak to her when she is looking at her laptop.

- Do not speak to her when she is looking at her books.

- Don’t take phone calls in the same room while she’s working.

- Do not pace around (a habit of mine while I’m working) in the same room while she’s working.

- Whisper while speaking to delivery men. Smile a lot so they don’t think you are mad. Smile more because that approach fails anyway so try to look like someone who smiles and whispers a lot.

- Remember to order extra bookmarks for her next book signing.

- Tip toe as stealthily as a ninja on a mission whenever walking around her as she works.

- Kiss her on the head regularly as she is working so she knows that I’m still in the flat (apartment).

- Remember to water Gina some more.

- Remember to order more posters for her book signings.

- Have spare pens within reach so when she loses one (or I ‘accidentally run off with one!) she doesn’t have to get up to hunt for something to write with.

- At random intervals clear a path through the mountains of books that are by the bed (she sits, perched at the head of the bed, working to her hearts content) so that she has at least half a chance of being able to climb off to go and hunt for more books and notes.

- Help move the books back and forth that she uses for research which cover almost every square inch of the bed every day.

- Remember to water Gina some more.

- Make sure Gina has a snack sometime in the afternoon.

- Try to remember the location of books she might need on our numerous book cases, particularly any obscure ones that she hasn’t used for a while but will probably need today.

Read the list a certain way and it could look like a strict list of chores but actually it is not meant to sound that way. I love the part I play in her life and would not change it for the world.

Gina works long, irregular hours which I imagine is normal for many writers and artists so I try to work and live around it as much as possible. Personally I think that it would be more natural for people to live and work the same hours that Gina does (1200 to 0400) but hey, that’s just my opinion. LOL! For the time being though we live in different time zones as I have to be up between 0600 to 0800 during weekdays but we manage to accommodate that admirably in my humble opinion. :)

Thanks for reading this blog. :)

Thanks for writing this blog!

I found it amusing, delightful and a lovely snapshot of a life founded in support and love (with a nice dose of chaos!)

Hello Kunzang Drolma. :)

Thank you for responding. Your words are very kind and put a smile on my face.

Yes, chaos reigns in our home in the best possible way.One of the first gifts I bought Gina when she was just seventeen was a colourful sign with Garfield covered in paints. The sign read 'Creativity is not a pretty sight!' LOL! How true and how wonderful at the same time. :)

good writer's husband

Ryoma,
You are a writer's dream. Don't forget to not stand behind her shoulder staring at the monitor while she's working. My husband can't seem to understand why that drives me crazy. Even though, as he assures me, he's not reading anything. I know that! He's NEVER read anything I've written. That's right: Never. Go figure.
Keep up the good work.
Jodi

Hi Jodi,

Thank you for reading and posting, and thank you for such a lovely compliment! I'm not sure I'm a writer's dream but I do my best to make sure Gina is comfortable.

Your advice made me laugh out loud! Yes, it was advice I was given 22 years ago when I used to watch over her shoulder as she painted, sketched or was researching the notes that are still part of the volumes of work she uses now. It was good advice that was heeded well I can assure you. :)

Don't want to assume anything about your husband, it's not my place, but perhaps one day when he starts to read your books he may not be able to put your work down. :)

Hope you have a great weekend. :)

ryoma, you've won your wings!

Sounds like you truly get it -- the writer's ideal working conditions (short of having a dedicated room -- library, study, office, or the like -- in the house). Lucky for Gina! Though if I were her, I'd want to replace one of those waterings with a coffee-ing, and another of them with a Diet-Coke-ing... : )

Ryoma Collia-Suzuki

Ryoma Collia-Suzuki says:

Thanks Evie.

You are always so kind. I hope you are well and having a great day.

We have a study actually, needs work, but it's there to be used. The bed provides the ideal work surface though, no desk could accomodate the number of books that she uses everyday for her new title. Even the bed is not big enough so the floor next to it is piled high with more books, folders and notes. It's quite a sight to see!

I make sure she gets at least one cup of hot chocolate a day, but if you were ever to meet us I would make sure there would be coffee and Diet Coke at the ready. You might even get a slice of chocolate cake too! LOL!

Hi Sumathi Mohan, :)

Thank you but I must confess I don't feel that is the case at all. I appreciate the sentiment though, it's such a huge compliment.

I feel I am the fortunate one, Gina is the Dream Girl for me and being part of her creative life is a privilege that is not to be taken for granted.

Don't overwater Gina!

She'll be peeing instead of writing. Back up on the watering.

Other than that, you're a keeper! Gina's lucky--Marilyn

Ryoma Collia-Suzuki

Ryoma Collia-Suzuki says:

Hah! You always make me smile Marilyn!

Thank you for that. :)

I laughed out loud at the watering comment. In truth she needs a lot of hydration and often forgets to drink something so I need to make sure she has a enough water. :) I am just as bad so Gina will often remind me to have something  to drink too. It's definitely a mutual thing. :)

The compliments that have been kindly given here in response to my blog have really taken me aback, Marilyn. I am fortunate to be part of Gina's life and Gina feels the same about me (I think! LOL!).

I get to share (in my own way) in her creative process. That's wonderous to me, I love it so much. In my eyes this means that I'm the really lucky one.

Can we clone you?!!

Gina Collia-Suzuki

Gina Collia-Suzuki says:

That shouldn't be at all

That shouldn't be at all difficult... I grew him from a pair of boxer shorts and an odd sock in a 'grow bag'.

Ryoma Collia-Suzuki

Ryoma Collia-Suzuki says:

That's done it now my love.

You've let the secret out of the bag, now the whole world will know that I am the first succesfully incubated grow-bag-baby, one step up from a cabbage patch doll!

LOL!!!!

Ryoma Collia-Suzuki

Ryoma Collia-Suzuki says:

LOL!

Belle, unfortunately a clone would have all of my bad habits too, unless you found a way of genetically engineering out the bad traits that I inherited from being grown from an odd sock. Hehehe.

Thankyou so much for this

Thankyou so much for this post Ryoma. Seems like every day I have to tell my partner to stop trying to make conversation when I'm working!! Can you teach him everything you know please?!!

Ryoma Collia-Suzuki

Ryoma Collia-Suzuki says:

Thank you for your kind post Sarah. :)

Bear in mind I've been in training for nearly 23 years! LOL!

I'm not plugging another post for the sake of it, but I don't know if you or your husband may find this blog amusing so I'm posting a link for you here:
