'Keep kissing the frogs' and wonderful ‘Gina’ stuff!

October 5, 2009, 1:56 pm

I had another first interview today. It went badly, I made rookie mistakes, and, to top it off, I felt that there wasn’t a good match between their needs and my background anyway. So, overall, was it a waste of time? Possibly, but at the same time, maybe not. It just shows that I have become over-confident. I prepared heavily for the meeting and was certain I had all the bases covered. I didn’t. Ah well, I will be better prepared next time! :)

As a former manager used to say, ‘Keep kissing the frogs!’. How very true, the hunt continues, the strong pace is the same, I will keep moving forward until I find the right role.

On a very happy note, Gina’s writing just goes from strength to strength. Her current project is almost complete. I am so very proud of her.

We are also still over the moon about the response she received from readers in Birmingham at the Borders book signing for The Wonderful Demise of Benjamin Arnold Guppy, breaking her old sales record at Waterstone’s flagship store at Bath by a good percentage.

Talking of Waterstone’s Bath, if you hadn’t seen the original blog that Gina posted about it, please have a mooch if you get a chance. The link is here, it was a fabulous day, with an exciting and surprise ending, courtesy of one of our most favouritest (I know, it’s one of my made-up words) people in the whole wide world, Clare.

This store is also one of our most favourite places in the whole world too and they have invited Gina back for another signing of The Wonderful Demise of Benjamin Arnold Guppy at the end of this month! Hurrah!!!

If you would like to have a mooch at the first chapter of this delightful dark comedy, the link is here.

I love it, not that I’m biased at all of course, hehe, but you don’t have to take my word for it. There are fabulous reviews to be found at Gina’s website too. :

Anyway, that’s it for my blog today. Fabulous news about Gina and as for me, a lesson learned and I will just keep on kissing the frogs. :)

I don't know about the frogs but.....

Hey, Ryoma, I don't know about the frog thing, but keep on pushing and don't let yourself get discouraged. In the past 2 weeks I have been interviewed twice. In each case, "we'll be in touch ONE WAY OR ANOTHER in a couple days." I'm still trying to decide what their definition of "a couple" is but I remain optimistic. This morning, I was snapping and irritated and when I realized it, quickly apologized to Brenda and asked her to forgive me for such foolishness. She responded there was nothing to forgive and that she understood my stress. Ironically, 15 minutes later my cell-phone rang. I have another interview on Wednesday morning at 9:00 AM.

And so, we unemployed professionals just keep on trying. If we keep up the faith, eventually it will pay off. This I truly believe. I'm excited for you and Gina in the book progress. I will keep the links and take a look soon. Lately, other than writing I have been burying myself in my studies and job search.

I refuse to "kiss frogs"....perhaps eat their legs...LOL...but anyway...be well, be safe, and keep driving forward!

Thanks for the kind words, Raymond.

Good luck on Wednesday, let's hope all works our well for you soon. I am certain that I will find a suitable role soon. The UK's 'silly season' (holidays, skeleton staff in offices, etc( is over, so I should be able to reach decision makers much more easily from now on. :)

I hope/think you will like Gina's website. I believe it's quite a challenge to have a central source of information that deals with both art history and dark humour, but Gina has done it and I think she has done an amazing job of it!

I know the feeling

Yeah, I know the feeling. But at least you're getting job interviews so that's a step in the right direction. I only hope society will change in the future so people don't have to go through the stress of unemployment and the awful feeling of not being wanted. As a teacher, I see myself and everyone else trying to impart a strong sense of self worth in the kids we teach. It is sad to think how commonly adults get treated like nobodies and written off.

Hi Adira,

Thanks for reading and posting, it's appreciated. :)

It's good to know that you and your colleagues are communicating such a positive message to the kids. It's always tough for the young ones, the world outside their education and home is often a mystery so they rely on TV and the adults around them to form an opinion of what the future holds for them. I get mad at the media in the UK. It's almost as if they love the fact there are so many negative statistics they can throw gleefully at people. And the amount of it aimed at the young is just ridiculous.

Keep up the great work, Adira. Those kids are our future and the work you and your peers do on a daily basis is appreciated and does not go unnoticed.

Wow!

It must have been so exciting to see all those signatures and add her own! =]
Did you hear back from the interview yet? Sometimes jobs take forever to reply if they reply at all :( Or maybe that's just here, I don't know.
It's good that you're sticking positive with it :D If you know what you did wrong then it only means that you'll blow them away brilliantly next time :D

Hi Stephanie

How lovely of you to post. Your response is much appreciated. :)

Oh yes, Gina was on cloud nine for ages after that book signing and the wonderful invitation into that exclusive room at Waterstone's Bath. I do not believe that all authors are invited into that hallowed room so it was such an honour and such an amazing experience.

Thanks for asking about the interviews. So far I have not found the right role yet but, as you quite rightly point out, learning from each meeting has been invaluable in plannning my next steps. I have revamped my website and 'rebranded' myself so I believe that will help too. All learned from helping Gina with her marketing.

I've been shortlisted for another interview with a major global company in two weeks, so let's hope it's a good match when I see them.

Basically, it's a matter of keeping those lips puckered for more frog kissing!

Thank you for the encouragement, Stephanie.
