The Daily Sam: Bring On the Thunder and the Lightning

April 12, 2009, 12:10 pm

I witnessed the Resurrection today. A group of us got up early and made our way to the Sunrise service at Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District, where every day of the year staff, members, and volunteers feed the hungry, find housing and jobs for the homeless, provide counseling for those in crisis, and fight for justice. Entering the well-lit church from a city street still shrouded by night we were greeted by smiling people, great music, prayers of hope, and words of inspiration. We were deservedly ribbed for being folks who only come by once a year and encouraged without a hint of self-righteousness to do what we can to help those in need. If Glide represents an outlier of the so-called Gathering Storm of Homosexual Rights, than count me in as one of the rainmakers. Bring on the thunder and the lightning. We need more rights, more honesty, and more love and acceptance for all people. He is risen indeed.

Good one Sam.

Three cheers for our neighbor to the South, Iowa for getting it right!

Rev Williams

Cecil Williams gave the sermon at my High School Baccalaureate ceremony. To give you a hint, the theme of the service was Let the Sun Shine In (when the song was new). He was/is such an impressive man. The work he has done these many years at Glide is a true representation of Matthew 25.
