"The Continual Condition" - Bukowski's New Book

I have long been a huge fan of Charles Bukowski. Indeed, I've rarely -- if ever -- met a bigger fan, although I'm sure such exists. I have a number of books, and a Bukowski t-shirt, he personally autographed for me when he was alive and we were corresponding. When he died in March 1994, I was deeply saddened, although I'd known he'd been in the hospital, was in his 70s and his health was ...

My Favorite Bookstore

My favorite bookstore. Gosh, where to start? I guess I’ll start at the top (my top, at least).I grew up admiring the Beats. I seriously dug Ginsberg, Kerouac, Burroughs and the others, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti especially spoke to me. Thus, as an avid reader, I read about Ferlinghetti opening his own bookstore in San Francisco a number of decades ago. It was called City Lights. City ...

My Wife's Illness

I last wrote about my wife, Jennifer, and I celebrating our sixth anniversary in Asheville, NC. That was close to a month ago. I ended the blog post about my wife getting a giant migraine, thus ending the fun times on a difficult note. Well, read on.My wife got worse, if that's possible. Her headache pain was on a scale of 10/10. She developed nausea and threw up regularly. Her joints ...

Our Anniversary Weekend

This past weekend, Jennifer and I celebrated our sixth anniversary together! I had decided some time ago to take her to Asheville NC for the long weekend, as we'd never been there, and we'd heard it was funky and nice. So, off we went. I made numerous pre-arrangements, and the first (and perhaps the best) was that we stayed at a lovely (and incredibly expensive!) B&B called the 1889 WhiteGate ...

I think I'll cut & paste this online article about Google Books into this blog entry. Here's the URL: http://money.cnn.com/2009/08/21/technology/google_books/index.htm. I'm curious to know what other writers out there think of this issue, particularly now that Google has settled with The Authors Guild.... Anyone? Amazon, Microsoft, Yahoo fight Google BooksThree Google rivals ...

We Are Now Homeowners!

My wife and I have been searching for our first ever home since January. See, I've moved all over the country, some 25 times or so, and have never settled anywhere long enough to buy a house. That's changed. We found a great one in February. Got into a bidder's war. Lost out on it, even though we offered more. The other party could close sooner than we could. Found another one, ...

I got this message from the Authors Guild late last night. It might prove interesting and/or informative to you authors out there.... We have two major developments to bring you up to date on. The first development involves Amazon's Kindle 2 reading device and the second pertains to our freelance class-action settlement (a settlement entirely independent of the settlement in our lawsuit ...

Super Steelers!!!

HELL YEAH!!! My Pittsburgh Steelers are in the Super Bowl AGAIN! Second time in four years, and seventh time overall. With a 5-1 Super Bowl record, the Steelers can become the first team in the NFL to win six Super Bowls. Sweet!First of all, in the NFC Championship Game, the upstart Arizona Cardinals beat the favored Philadelphia Eagles 32-25 to go to their first Super Bowl ever. I like ...
