From the Sunnyside...

October 9, 2008, 6:37 pm

From the conversations I have been having with friends and the assorted strangers I chat up on any given day lately, it's clear that it is easier to feel more like Eeyore than Tigger these days.

The one thing I know for sure, though, is that nothing is gained by wallowing in the news of it all.

Sure, we all need to express our fears and concerns out loud and allow the burden to leave the pit of our stomach or the walls of our heart. BUT (and this is a BUT bigger than anything J LO or Kim Kardashian has ever rocked in a pair of designer jeans), we need to stay busy doing the things that put a spring in our step, instead of allowing our head to sink down into those boggy waters.

Sure, we can't single handedly fix the economy, stop the world's wars or cure cancer, but we CAN perform small acts of kindness and selflessness that will have a ripple effect on those around us.

Today, I am nominating an extraordinary woman I know for an award she deserves. There's nothing in it for me to do this, of course, but I feel a great sense of satisfaction for helping bring her some recognition.

I'm also making my daughter's favorite dinner and my husband's favorite cake to welcome him home from a business trip. (This, by the way, is a far too rare occurrence in my house.)

What small act can you do today to bring some light into someone else's boggy place?

Well, I worked with 16

Well, I worked with 16 writers who turned in work today, encouraging them to tell their stories even more fully.  And stories are good, especially in times like these!

I'd say you're covered, Jessica

Good teachers do their share of daily good deeds by just walking through the classroom door. You have the seal of approval of this work in progress!

I couldn't agree more

You nailed it, Shana. We can always give. And we need to, so that we can remind ourselves that the world is full of joy if we seek it. Fear and grief don't always get the last word.

Thank you for being such a positive spirit in the world. You brighten my day whenever I read one of your posts. I've never read one all the way through without laughing out loud at some point.

Today's giggle: J Lo and Kim K.'s big "BUTS." Loving it.

Thanks!

And I love your line: "Fear and grief don't always get the last word."

Amen to that! Because, at the very least, we are entitled to tell the sinister duo where to go. :)
