Getting Smithy with it on Oprah

November 12, 2008, 11:55 am

Will Smith was on Oprah last week to promote his new movie, “Seven Pounds.” While the plot of the movie doesn’t scream “Must See” to me, I need to see that movie for one simple reason: I love that man!

I say this not in a lustful way since I am a happily married woman and Will seems perfectly content to cuddle up with Jada, a woman who hits a perfect 10 on the hotness scale (while I barely reach an 8 on the cuteness scale with a healthy application of concealer and a chin-high bodysuit of Spanx).

My love and appreciation for Will, you see, is all emotion. He is a man who lives BIG, proud and laughing out loud. He makes no apologies for living the lifestyle of a $4 billion dollar man, but somehow he isn’t at all obnoxious about it. He loves his life and it shows.

He entered the studio with a smile that could be the very root of global warming. He then proceeded to hug half the studio audience before Oprah convinced him to join her outstretched arms. The man simply effervesced.

Will makes me think about the moments when Robert Benigni (in “Life is Beautiful”) and Cuba Gooding Jr. (in “Jerry McGuire”) won their respective Oscars. They wanted their awards, and they were generous enough to share their sense of giddy triumph with us so we could savor every moment of it with them.

The rest of us may not have the platform or the bankroll that these men have, but we can see them as a source of inspiration to follow our passion and celebrate the little victories that come along the way.

I'll start be celebrating my new spackle-worthy tube of concealer.

Of course, I don't know the man personally, but I've always liked him.  I even liked Men in Black.  I liked him in that really bad movie he made about the failed superhero, and watched the whole thing on the way home from New York recently.  He's just warm and nice, or, at least, that's what comes off the screen.  He's so human.  And even if that's not true when he's at home, the idea that he's nice is enough for me!

But does he make you laugh like Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon? Of course, I haven't caught too many of their films - I've only heard tell of them. Straight up!

as grin. While I do value a good belly laugh, those are hard to come by. This leaves me content to smile and admire someone who seems to really enjoy the perks of his job. He isn't too cool or too cynical to enjoy the ride. It makes me want to focus on enjoying my own more.

On the subject of laughing, though, I have recently discovered that the single thing that makes me laugh the hardest is being in an aura of funny and feeling the contagious effect of laughter. It makes me laugh harder than when I am alone.  I suppose it is sort of like a yawn to me. This is especially true if my husband or daughters are the ones to be cracking up. I just love to hear people laugh!

This is precisely why it's worth the ticket price to see a movie in the theater. I love the energy of the crowd.

Thanks for reading, Jessica and Rosy!
