where the writers are

Steve Hauk I search for a style to fit the characters or theme or genre, so my style varies.

Blimey! Someone help this kid!

OK, "Elvis" is a little British kid, and he recently posted on YouTube that he can't make himself read Of Mice and Men. Class assignment. He's really heartfelt about not liking reading at all.

Check out what he has to say:

You're back? Traumatic, right?

If whatever he has becomes epidemic, we're all in trouble.

He does make some interesting points, though. For instance, even though the title of the book is Of Mice and Men, there's not, as he points out irritably, a mouse on the cover. There's not even a man, just a part of one!

Anyway, if you have any solutions for Elvis about getting into reading, you can go his
YouTube address above and comment. He said he's looking for help.

Give the little chap a hand.

'It doesn't look like it's

'It doesn't look like it's about mice'... poor chap, he looked like he was in real physical pain. I looked like that when my English teacher made us all read 'The Martyrdom of Bishop Farrar'. The funny thing is that it's often the books you hated at school that you grow to adore many years later.

I haven't actually read 'Of Mice and Men', but I feel inspired to read it now... I'll think of Elvis while I'm doing it.

You have to hand it to Elvis, Gina,

he's expressive. Maybe a Thespian to be.

What if...

What if he starts by watching John Ford's "The grapes of wrath" starring Henry Fonda who sings in the film a sweet song entitled"Come and sit by my side if you love me".
That surely will make the boy love Steinbeck's other works later.
I agree with you.It is a big problem.

Steve Hauk says:

Yes, a problem, and

interesting how he admitted reading subtitles on dvds. At least he's reading.

Hi Steve,

I saw your comment to him, that was a lovely thing to do. In his response he says he'll have a go, let's hope he enjoys it.

What an incredibly productive young man! Did you notice that he's produced twenty-seven YouTube videos already? Blimey.

What a find, Steve. Hats off to you.

Steve Hauk

Steve Hauk says:

No, I didn't notice that _

so, he doesn't read but he's pretty creative. He'll probably be a novelist someday!

Blimey!

Ryoma Collia-Suzuki

Ryoma Collia-Suzuki says:

Blimey, indeed. :)

If you pop back to his video, you'll see that there have been a few responses already. :)

I wonder if this will inspire him to read more? I hope so.

Steve Hauk

Steve Hauk says:

Or, Ryoma,

turn him into a rabble-rouser! Anything is possible.

And I wish we had a term as good as blimey.

A book about him might help

Maybe if someone penned a short book about young Elvis with a few photos of him in it he might develop a greater appreciation for what reading has to offer. But something like that would obviously have to come from a parent or some other authority figure he cares about. He seems somewhat prone to anxiety and might help himself if he could just chill a bit :-)

Steve Hauk says:

Aberjihani, that's a good idea

I've been reading about Willa Cather recently and the biographer said once she saw her byline on an article, she was hooked on the idea of being a writer. Maybe Elvis, seeing something on himself, would be hooked on being a reader.

Someone must see if

An opthalmologist looked at the Elvie video

and felt it might be good for his parents to get his sight checked again (he wears glasses). He does rub his eyes a lot.

This blog

This blog proves that asking for help ends always up by meeting a stretched helping hand.
There are many streched helping hands now towards Elvis from people of deep insight and different disciplines.
Hey Elvis, maybe the real solution to your problem is in reading the book you hold in the video.
It is just a challenge you have to take.

Great point.

Does no good running away from it.
