After the Break-In

October 4, 2008, 1:41 pm

I wonder what the thieves were thinking

As they crowbarred our front door open

As they kicked and kicked and kicked it in,

Splintering the wood, leaving sticks hanging

Off the hinges, as they walked into the house and took

The TV, the computers, the backpacks, the camera,

As they rifled through our underwear drawers,

Throwing boxers and panties on the floor, digging

Through socks and t-shirts and pajamas for cash,

And I wonder why they left my Taylor guitar

Resting in the stand by the window,

They could have pawned it,

Maybe one of the thieves could play it while

The others went through the loot, dividing it up

Or whatever it is thieves do after the heist,

And I wonder where they live,

If they have families, maybe their kids

Are watching cartoons right now on our TV,

Or possibly the thieves are watching CNN,

Checking in on the 700 Billion Dollar Bailout.

I don't think they thought about us,

Just like I doubt the Federal Government considers me

Or my husband or anybody,

And I contemplate the grand larceny

In this country that's been going on for eight years,

How many of us played a part: two years after

We bought this house, the appraiser said

It was worth 300,000 more dollars, gee,

How could that be, a teacher and a cook

Living in a house that costs 600,000, it was absurd

But sure, okay, yay!

We were nearly millionaires if we sold our home,

But then where would we live,

We couldn't buy another house in our neighborhood,

They were now four or five or more million,

And I wondered what the poor folks were thinking

About this, so many of them poorer than ever, yay,

Why not take from the rich, so many of them richer than ever.
I don't really blame the thieves as I look at my boarded up door,

Which can be broken down at any moment, the police told me

Crime is on the rise, as if it wasn't before?,

What can we do?

Get guns, get ammo, get tanks,

Get a vicious dog and name it Spike.

Enjoyed your poem, but sorry for your violation and losses.

Susan,

The civilized among us are empathetic with your ordeal. But realize this, if the buggers are caught, their trial and appeals will cost the taxpayer a million plus dollars. Then to jail them will cost $50,000 a piece per year. Better for our nation right now if they aren't caught for quite a while. Hopefully, their net from your TV and computers, etc. will keep them in drugs and inactive for many months.

If there is a bright side to it at all, surely they will be voting Democratic.

Susan Browne says:

Hi Dennis,

That makes me feel so much better: the thieves will be voting for Obama.

Yes, we are certainly all in this mess together.  What can you do but laugh when you're not crying and replacing your broken-down doors?
