Leonard Cohen, That's How the Light Gets In

April 15, 2009, 12:35 pm

I saw Leonard Cohen last night, master of duende.  Out of all the celebrities in the world, I'd love to hang out drinking wine with Leonard.  My husband and the friends we shared the evening with agreed. One of the best nights of our lives.

What a soulful concert of poetry and music!  Leonard played for a full-bodied two hours.  He's 74---no concerts for the past fourteen years; he was studying religions.  He spent years studying in a Zen monastery and became a Buddhist monk.  He said he finally gave it all up: "My cheerfulness kept breaking through." His band was so incredible, and three fabulous vocalists. One of the vocalists, Sharon Robinson, co-wrote some of Leonard's songs/poems.  She sang a song solo--I hope she has her own cd, have to look it up.  Sometimes, Leonard kneeled while he was singing.  I wept when he recited poems.  The music was wonderful, but his words, his words!  Every minute of this concert was like the chorus from Leonard's poem, Anthem: "Ring the bells that still can ring/Forget your perfect offering./There is a crack in everything./That's how the light gets in."

I'm on spring vacation and spending time at the beach, but I had to come back to town to be in the presence of this wonderful poet.  Leonard Cohen: I've loved his writing since I was a teenager, learning how to play Suzanne on the guitar.

If you get to see him, you're in for a treat.  He's playing tonight at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland.

meeting with Leonard

My friend met Leonard Cohen backstage, probably about 25 years ago. She said that as soon as she walked backstage Leonard grabbed hold of her and gave her a big french kiss. "He had the coldest tongue I've ever felt."

Sounds like you had a blast!

I was going to say I was jealous, but I got to see Amy Goodman last night and she was fantastic. It's too bad they couldn't combine the events: Amy Goodman and Leonard Cohen, together at last!

Here's Sharon Robinson for you...

As I was almost the Alpha on

As I was almost the Alpha on this tour (I saw him at the fourth venue after he started) I thought you'd be the Omega. But, Good Lord, he's going for another three months and also returning to Europe. That's a world tour of a year and three months. He must be kissed by angels.

What a class act he put on!  My God.  It was incredible.  Soul to the bone. I have  friends who are going for the second time tonight and paying hundreds of dollars to sit in the orchestra.

just saw him in Seattle

Hi Susan, i just ran across your blog via google and just had to jump in. I was so jazzed by Leonard's performance here in Seattle a few nights ago - wow... i totally concur with you.  A beautiful performance  and as my painter friend who went with me said: "a little Leonard on one knee w/ hat over his heart, lives in my memory..waiting for the miracle."

I see you are born in Long Beach, California that's my hometown as well...  quite a birthing place  it is for creative souls.

 take care!  - robert deeble

I was floored

My fiance and I saw him while standing in the rain the other night near DC and he is my largest inspiration. He floored us both with Anthem. It was beautiful to watch 70+ year olds sitting in the rain and cold with no umbrellas swaying back and forth. Duende was all I could think of while watching his guitar player from barcelona.
