Robberies in Oakland
Yesterday, thieves visited our home and busted down the front door and stole the flat screen TV. Then they went through our drawers and took whatever they wanted and left the clothes on the floor. Then they went down to the in-law unit which is my husband's office and broke through that door and took two computers, a camera, a backpack, and who knows what else. We are still sifting through the mess. The doors are destroyed, so we have to get them replaced, and last night it was fun trying to sleep among the wreckage without a front door.
The police said robbery is flourishing now in the Oakland hills. We thought our little house was safe up here in the pines. We don't have much, really. A few computers, a TV, two bicycles. The TV is probably the most expensive item we own besides our double-paned windows. Double-paned windows are good, the police said. Thieves don't like them because they are hard to break and when they do, the blood gets all over, and voila, there's DNA.
It's an awful feeling, having your home violated. I went through this once before, when I owned even less. I was young, poor, trying to get through graduate school. I came home from school and work to find my tiny house by the creek ransacked. That time, the thieves took my bed apart, throwing the mattress into the kitchen. They stole my best jewelry, which was one diamond pendant necklace my mother had given me when I graduated from college.
The poor stealing from the poor.
When people are frustrated, angry and hopeless, they will do anything.
Welcome to America.

Crud...
Susan, I'm so sorry. Let me know if you need anything-I've got this weekend off so I can help if you need it.
Ericka Lutz says:
Oh Susan
I am so sorry. What a terrible violation.
Susan Browne says:
Thanks Ericka and Jennifer
The door guy is here, he is very nice. Joe. He's boarding up the doors. He told me he does at least one of these a day now. He said he just bought a gun.
Jennifer Gibbons says:
Zoey!
Is Zoey okay?
Charles A. Ray says:
No place is safe
There are no loneger "safe" zones in the U.S., and I attribute a lot of that to the "do whatever makes you feel good" culture that we have become. Everyone, it seems, feels entitled to do whatever suits them personally without regard to the impact on anyone else. This is just an extreme of that. You have my sympathy, and I hope you never have to go through something like this again.
Susan Browne says:
Hi Charles
I agree with that. It's like we've been on this huge binge, just having a high old time, while everything is actually going to hell. Now for the hangover.

Our house (Berkeley) was burglarized (TV, stereo, jewelry) 30 years ago. The burglars (the same ones, we suspect) waited a couple months until we'd replaced everything, then broke in again but were scared off, somehow, before they grabbed anything. Realizing the lightening-striketh-not-twice approach wasn't working, we invested in a VERY visible burglar alarm system. The police said, given the nature of the criminals we were dealing with, probably kids, that would be enough to make them pick on someone else. They -- or their children or grandchildren -- haven't been back since. I am knocking wood while I type, but I recommend the investment.
Susan Browne says:
Hi Bob
Yes, we are wiring the house to the gills.
No, these were not kids. They were professionals. There have been many robberies in my neighborhood.
We will put in the home security system, we will put the signs all over the property, we will get a dog the size of the White House and just as oblivious and rabid and fanged, we will get guns and ammo, maybe a tank...
Jennifer Gibbons says:
don't forget the pepper spray...
and barbed wire. Name the dog Spike.
