NaNo Write 2008 and House of Cards
Every November writers from all over the world commit themselves to a National Novel Writing Competition. The goal is to write 50K words in a month. RedRoom has decided to go one better and up the competition by giving a prize (randomly drawn) to the lucky author who happens to reach that goal. Since I usually don't do NaNo and really try not to set goals with my writing, I decided to give it a shot. I'd already committed myself to doing the 50K challenge at one of the writing forums I frequent, and I only did so because I promised someone I would complete my WIP, House of Cards and I hate not keeping a promise....plus, I've been messing with this dang book for four years (off and on) so it's about time to finish it so I can move onto the next book. Of course, part of the problem I've been having with not completing the wip is motivation...I really lack it. Why? you ask? Lots of reasons; fear of failure, fear of success...would you believe there are actually days where I'm glad I don't have an agent anymore?? Of course then there are days when I wish I did because it's validation. I'm so screwy.
Anyway....I also want to finish House of Cards for me because I think it will be my best work...and third book's the charm, eh? What's funny about this story is that while I'm having difficulty putting it on the page, I don't have a problem verbally describing what the book is about...which is why so many are urging me to finish it.
So, anyway, the challenge starts Saturday, November 1st...although my son has a baseball tournament this weekend so my start date will actually be Monday...although I'll spend the next couple of days prepping. I'm currently 34K into the story and hoping to hit 90K so this 50K challenge will be good for me....especially since I can be oh so competitive.
So.....good luck to those of you joining me. I'll keep you posted on my success...or lack of. :-P

34k is a lot to start from! I have about 5k of notes and ideas, and every time I think about how I'll start on Saturday, I discover I've left something critical out of my notes! I assume you have your characters and general plot arc already settled, so it should flow smoothly.
I'm so excited to see Red Room members diving in on this!

Yeah, you'd think so, huh?
I'm starting the 'middle' of the book which usually tend to sag for me so I'm overly conscious of it...and over think it.
You know, Roy, at some point you're going to have to put the notes aside and start writing, because, even though you've researched out the wahzoo there will always be something else you'll want more info on. So....just sit at the computer and type...even if it's just "once upon a time" because then at least you'll have started the story...and you can go back and delete that sentence. ;-)
Yeah....I should practice what I preach. hah
Good luck to you!
