Here are links to my last three articles, all of which address fellow Redroomer Barack Obama, and the phenomenon that has been his campaign. Mostly, they address the racial aspects of the Obama phenomenon. I post them in reverse order. The first of these examines the white denial and backlash that has met the words--most of which were demonstrably true--of Obama's pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Although Obama may feel the political need to distance himself from Wright (or indeed, he may simply disagree with Wright), I feel no need to do so, and think the bigger problem is white folks' inability to face the horrific history of racism in this country. The second addresses the absurd arguments I've been hearing from some white folks about how black votes for Obama somehow signify "reverse racism" and are motivated by anti-white bias (I know, sigh...). The third (which was written first) examines the way in which many of Obama's white supporters seem to be enamored of the color-blind "racial transcendence" aspect of his campaign, even as that frame is itself one that reinforces both racism, and white denial about racism, in the long run.
