The past two days have been beautiful, with plenty of sunshine and pure blue skies, but before that the entire month of June has been gloomy, grey, foggy, cold, and windy -- in other words, a typical San Francisco Summer, and according to the weatherman, we can expect more of the same. But my heart is warm, because my Nell Brinkley book has been receiving rave reviews on the internet, from the likes of Publisher’s Weekly, USA Today, and the New Yorker! So, if you missed my signing at the Cartoon Art Museum, where will I be next? If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and especially if you love old movies, you may be coming to the Silent Film festival (July 10th through the 12th) at the famous Castro Theater, a wonderful 3-day affair, featuring at least 3 different silent films per day, and I’ll be there, signing my Nell Brinkley book, starting at 4:15 on Saturday, July 11th. Come for the great movie, Wild Rose, a Chinese (!) silent, stay to look at my book and/or simply say hello.

Or, if you’re coming to Comicon, the biggest comic convention in America, in San Diego, I’ll be presenting my Powerpoint show on Nell at 1PM on Thursday, July 24th, and signing copies of the book at the Fantagraphics table. See you there!

Ya know what’s great? I’m not longer the only woman writing books about women cartoonists. There are two wonderful books that came out recently: "Jackie Ormes: the First African American cartoonist," by Nancy Goldstein, published by the University of Michigan Press, and "Rose O’Neill, the Girl Who Loved to Draw," by Linda Brewster, published by Boxing Day Books. I cannot recommend these books enough; they are loaded with fabulous illustrations and information. Ask your local bookstore to carry these books, and if they won’t -- buy them on Amazon.com.
