Student council filled with rock musicians
I'm here to report Natalie came home the other day disappointed and a bit angry. She did not get elected into the student council. The most well known kids in the high school are in rock bands and the most well known kids are the ones that get into student council.
On Saturday evenings until cool weather rock concerts were held at the Peace and Friendship Park amphitheater. Different bands playing (all at the same time it sounded like to me) from different high schools.
She agreed thought she had had a good practice experience and would be ready to make a new attempt next fall at college.
I'm also very proud to announce that she received a certificate for excellent grades. Only seven out of 100 students received this recognition from her high school class.
When we lived in Connecticut some unpleasant things would come up at their schools. I never demanded any special treatment for my children (which was unusual for a parent). I told them they had to learn to deal with the children and the teachers and the different situations. That was part of what learning at school was all about.
Here in Crete the school situation has been much easier. Not so many overwhelming behavior problems by their classmates nor any bomb scares. Still I think their experiencing learning to cope with situations at school on their own helped them with the change from one country to the other.

Their loss
Unless the student council needs rock band information and expertise for some reason, it sounds as if Natalie's loss was really their loss. Tell her we are very proud of her academic excellence, and I am pleased she plans to participate in student government in college next year. You are right, I think, to let your kids fight their own battles (usually at least) so they gain that experience and the resulting strength that comes from standing up for yourself. We all want to make the path smooth for our kids, but that may not be good training for life.

Hi Vicki
It's all part of the learning experience of life, and from the sound of it, your daughter has a good head on her shoulders which will put her in good stead for the future.
Congratulations as well!!
I wish her every good blessing that life can bestow; in addition to having a fab Mom, of course!

thanks from Natalie
Natalie says thank you. and thank you from me, too!
I didn't leave my girls totally on their on at the schools in the u.s.a. I volunteered every day at one or the other of their schools. they were at public schools. Lots of children that did not teach their children appropriate behavior so I helped the teachers and also was there in case the girls needed me!
XOXOXO
