New Blogs In The Red Room
King Lear and The House of Mondavi »
What can Shakespeare teach us about a troubled family business? That’s a question I’ll try to answer at a discussion hosted by a long-lasting and large book group in Burlingame, Calif., this fall. Over the summer, the group has decided to read Shakespeare’s tragedy, King Lear, alongside my book, The House of Mondavi: The Rise and Fall of an American Wine Dynasty.
Keats' Sonnet on Lear and Literary Biography »
As a way to say goodbye to Lear I thought I would share this poem, and some thoughts sparked by it:
"He must out-do the Devil, to be a Poet in the rank with Shakespeare" »
So said Thomas Rhymer in his 1693 treatise A Short View of Tragedy.
"That's how it is on this bitch of an earth" »
Matthew Biberman writes today about the "tragedy of tragedy," about nothing and nowhere to fall from.
Lear, Gitmo, Beckett: On Torture »
In previous posts, I have drawn attention to the significance of Edmund—he is the glue of the play. And I have stressed that—for me—Lear is indeed mad from the start.
The only reading I got done yesterday involved The NY Times, The SF Chronicle, and redroom blogs, which were so interesting to me in terms of discussing King Lear and &qu

`At Deptford & Stratford' _ Scene One »
Scene: a pub in Deptford, just off the Thames. Four men at a table, drinking heavily, worried.
Something comes from nothing: On Cordelia's Silence »
While keeping in mind that backstage Edmund is busy accumulating power and leaving destruction in his wake, I turn now to Lear’s main plot.
King Lear and the wrong end of the telescope »
What is King Lear about? More importantly, who is it about? The answer is a surprising one. Logically, the answer is Edmund, the bastard son of the Earl of Gloucester.
Lear: Is 'thank you' redemption enough? »
Please watch Youtube video of Belle's Chinese "King Lear" a graphic novel in the making
Woven into the Red Room King Lear conversation, James Whyle wrote that Lear's "thank you" is the most important line in the play.
"It Raineth Every Day": A bridge from 12th Night to Lear »
As I mentioned in my comment to Judith Tannenbaum’s blog, both plays feature talented musical fools who sing snatches of songs with the refrain “For the rain it raineth every day.”

Leary of `Lear,' and about Cordelia and the great Junius Brutus Booth »
I sometimes talk to myself and have two daughters of my own, so writing about `King Lear' makes me a little nervous.
Revenge »
Please watch Belle's Youtube video, a Chinese "King Lear" in the making.
The first time I saw King Lear performed was in 1964 -- the year of Shakespeare's quadricentennial. I was a high school senior and Shakespeare was everywhere in Los Angeles that year.
Lear »
In response to Belle's Lear call, and just to kick off, here's an excited piece of PR I did when directing it:
