Do you have to know how to draw before creating a graphic novel?
This book I am reading called Drawing Words and Writing Pictures by Jessica Abel and Matt Madden says that you have to learn the language of comics first and realize that drawing is a part of the whole.
They even gave an example of dots talking and doing things.
What do you think? Are comics really a language? If so, is it an international one?
I'm off to drawing stick figures. This book is a real dream though. It's set up for a 15-week course in art school.
Best,
Ruth

No, one doesn't need to be
No, one doesn't need to be able to draw to make a comic. It is possible to transmit an idea from artist to reader using rudimentary sketches, or even dots as you mentioned. I've seen comics made using clip art or photos. Conversely, some who can draw very well may not know how to use that skill to best tell what they want to tell.
It's a matter of figuring out what you want to say, then figuring out the best way to say it.

I've just uploaded a comics that contains pretty much no drawings for your enjoyment:

All you need are dots!
Hi Marc,
There's hope for me yet as a graphic novelist with dots as characters.
These remind me of a children's book by Leo Lionni called Blue and Yellow I think it is.
Thanks for the great posting.
