Description

"Where were you when you heard Kennedy was shot?" has almost become a cliché. We're going to expand it a bit by telling stories about where we were when recent events that have become historically important occurred. If you had personal ties to the event, so much the better.

Where was I in 1969?

Fifteen years old, went to Bethel on my own with my parents' okay, and met my first great love backstage at Woodstock. Barely slept for four days. The moon landing, I remember watching on a TV in a store window somewhere off Broadway, on the east side. That summer was also the Stones at Madison Square Garden and my first trip to San Francisco, the city that made it clear, within moments of arrival, that it was my home. I went out for the big free show at Altamont and never made it out of town: too busy falling desperately in love with San Francisco.

1969, best summer of my life. I'd love to have it back.

Jeffrey Brace

Jeffrey Brace says:

In '69? Boston...

I was two years from graduating high school. Living in the 'burbs (first of the mall rats) working in Boston during the summers. Living good at home, but still buying underground comics at a place on Tremont. The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and all that.

Watched the moon landing early in the morning... my dad, and his boss, who was also a good friend. That's a story all of itself.

My buddies all had the summers off, but I worked in the city. The summer of '69 I saw the posters about Woodstock and checked out the lineup. Anyone would want to go to that show. Ahhhh, but wouldn't you know I had to work that weekend. "What a maroon!"
