The Dead

:

The Día de los Muertos celebration occurs on the 1st and 2nd of November, coinciding with the Catholic holy days of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day.

It is believed that during the Day of the Dead the souls of the departed visit the living.
Family and friends gather to join in the festivities and celebrate with those who have died.

Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, decorating them with sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with offerings of these gifts.

Festivities

At night the cemeteries are ablaze with candles and crowded with joyful people, some wearing masks, taking turns telling tales of funny events and anecdotes about the departed who is believed to be in their midst.
