Joanna Russ was the first feminist speculative fiction writer I fell in love with. Her erudite humour and passion swept me up and taught me to think with a brain I didn't know I had. She, along with Audre Lorde, would be the most lasting influences on my work. Audre's fiery spirit, groundbreaking work for women of color and publishing helped me organize the great fire that Joanna Russ lit inside of me.
