Name of founder and executive director: Linda HahnerLiteracy Center

Year founded: 2004

Accomplishments:

  • Serves as many as 1.8 million free lessons a day to children in 193 countries
  • Impacts more than three million children a year

Profile: The Literacy Center Education Network is dedicated to providing all children with equal access to high-quality education material. Its first websiteis an online repository of free, interactive literacy lessons. Each lesson is currently available in English, Spanish, French, and German. The site allows preschool-age children to practice language skills in safe and fun learning environments. Because the site does not have advertising or confusing graphical elements, parents and teachers feel free to use its material with small children at home, and in classrooms, libraries, and computer labs. It is the organization's goal to responsibly grow its resource into the largest free literacy network in the world.Literacy Center 2

The Network wants to add more lessons and more languages. In 2008, it will be creating specific language funds so donors can donate directly to the language of their choice. All donations go directly to building and maintaining the organization's free literacy material.
