Old Friend From Far Away

Months ago, a friend of mine read a book on writing memoir by Natalie Goldberg, called Old Friend From Far Away, and when she finished it she immediately emailed me about it. I searched the public library, but apparently it was 'too recent' to be stocked (although the Miami library had it, hmph). It was also way too expensive for me in hardback. So I sighed and let go.But then I was in a ...

Editorial Disillusionment

I recently had a very long conversation with another writer, whom I respect and like very much, about my manuscript and what it needs: an overhaul. All of his suggestions rang true with me, and were extremely helpful, but when I hung up the phone I felt like I’d just ended my first day climbing K2. I feel like there’s so much work to be done, and I don’t even know how to start. But of ...

Flash NonFiction?

This past weekend I rediscovered my Flash Fiction Forward anthology, and remembered how much I love Flash Fiction. At first, I thought it would be interesting to give fiction another shot, in the short 'flash' form, and then I thought, what about nonfiction? Why shouldn't I be able to write about interesting occurences or relationships in my own life, in the style of a flash fiction or short ...
