About Me
I am a pop culture reporter for the Miami Herald, one of the most award-winning daily newspapers in U.S. history. I also blog about culture, lifestyles, politics, and race at MiamiHerald.com.
I have been a journalist for more than 10 years, and my work has appeared in dozens of major newspapers and magazines in the U.S. and Canada, including the Chicago Tribune, the Washington Post, the Toronto Star, U.S. News & World Report, O: The Oprah Magazine, and Life & Style.
I have contributed culture and political commentary on CNN, and Miami's CBS Television affiliate. And I've done feature reports and been an expert guest on a number of National Public Radio and Public Radio International shows.
Relationship Status
- Married to Mrs. JB, a beautiful elementary school teacher, since June 2005.
Family
I have parents.
Interests & Hobbies
When I'm not writing or on air and Mrs. JB isn't in her classrom, together we travel, hunt for antiques and classic movies, photograph wildlife in the Florida Everglades, swim in the Atlantic, and take long hikes with our Black Lab/Springer Spaniel mix.
Alone I'm a not-quite-avid cyclist, and when my back isn't killing me I kickbox.
Favorite Books
- Invisible Man, Autobiography of an Ex-Coloured Man, Devil in a Blue Dress, Anonymous Rex, Black Like Me, The Da Vinci Code, Don't Believe the Hype: Fighting Cultural Misinformation, Makes Me Wanna Holler, the Bible - King James Version, Bury the Lead, Basket Case, Sun Tzu Was a Sissy, The Tipping Point, Blink, The Religion of the Samarai, How I Almost Lost My Mind Trying to Understand My Brain, Plan B, Ivanhoe, Life on the Mississippi, The Rage of a Privileged Class.
WORK
- I am a pop culture reporter for the Miami Herald and a blogger for MiamiHerald.com. I have also written and edited for newspapers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and London, England. And my work has appeared in dozens of major newspapers across the United States and Canada, as well as papers in Malaysia and the Middle East, including the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, the Detroit Free Press, the Denver Post, the Orlando Sentinel, the Houston Chronicle, and the Sacramento Bee. I have also contributed to U.S. News & World Report, O: the Oprah Magazine, and Life & Style. I've been a regular digital culture and lifestyles commentator on Miami's CBS Television affiliate. I've contributed feature stories to and appeared as an expert guest on a number of National Public Radio and Public Radio International shows, and I contributed culture and political opinions on CNN during the 2008 U.S. Presidential Campaign.
UPCOMING WORK
- I have completed one work of non-fiction - a study of youth culture, race relations, and American politics. I have completed two novels - an old-fashioned whodoneit with dark humor and Hiaasen-esque twists, and a tongue-in-cheek day dream of the day a deity decided to visit earth to see how it functions at street level. And I am developing a non-fiction project about a true crime family, in which most of the family members were violent felons, and projects about trends in race relations, Internet social networking, relationships, and the practice of formal religion.
INFLUENCES
- My biggest fiction influences are Carl Hiaasen, Walter Mosley, Michael Connelly, and Mark Twain. My non-fiction influences include Ellis Cose, and Malcolm Gladwell.
AGENTS
- None yet. I'm in the hunt, so contact me if you think you'd like to represent me, or you know someone else who might!
