About Me

  • Every idea has it's ideal expression. Some are meant to be bumper stickers, some are cinematic. I never intended to be a writer but words are at the center of everything. My college cartooning career (Perfectly Revolting) took a back seat way to my publishing—illustration, co-writing, editing, graphic design—job (The Winning Family, On the Wings of Self-Esteem). The opera I wrote turned into a musical (Shoes, a Mirror, and a Big, Pink Rose) and a novella (Everyday Enchantments). A novel (I, Uterus) and memoir (Myth America) take shape and evolve. Along the way come greeting cards and songs, articles and essays. Some of these are in the world now; most of them are waiting in the wings wishing I would quit my day job and kick my volunteer habit.

I don't know what I am or how to define myself other than "creative person." I just keep my heart open to my muses.

Relationship Status

  • to Dave Caven, barely-published essayist and fabulous dedicated blogger, steadfast supporter of the arts (mostly mine), notorious funny guy and walking cultural encyclopedia. (Handy to have around when I'm writing!)

Family

  • Mom is a community psychogist, writer & speaker (The Winning Family, On the Wings of Self-Esteem); Dad is a chaotically creative family doc and his brother a lawyer who wrote a novel (The Physics of Caribou Creek); my big brother is a chess master/amazing teacher/life coach/writer, my little brother is an incredible idea-machine who is under-employed in high-tech, and my baby brother is a mild-mannered sommelier who KILLS with comedy when provoked. Son is adorable, funny, annoying (mostly concerning nerf guns & video games), with emerging talents in air guitar, Lego technology, and language (at four his favorite vehicle was "an articulated bus").

Interests & Hobbies

  • horses, Depression/Deco Era culture, women's history & culture, the multitude of stories of nature (human and otherwise), green driving & environmentalism, kids, public schools, pop culture, graphic design, comic arts, alternative health, mysticism, old movies; trains, cars and superheroes (mostly by proxy)
