About Me

  • I have three daughters, two bio- and one where I managed to avoid the birthing and diapering part.  When the first two were small, I read to them at bedtime and also read to them upon waking, helping ease them into the day.  Both are now avid readers.  KidOne now lives across the causeway to go to the university there; she is a full-time student and part-time grocery store checker.  KidTwo has been living in Bogota with their daddy but recently returned to California after a year and a half absence to stay with KidThree and me and go to school some online and s ...

  • An Inside Look at the World of Public Assistance

    November 17, 2009

    • This blog entry was inspired by Deborah Grabien's comment on her problems with the system, but it's really for everyone who's ever had any contact with the public assistance system, and anyone whose friend or relative has had any contact with the public assistance system, and anyone who pays taxes that help fund the public assistance system. My credentials for writing this are that I worked in the ...
  • My No-Longer-Reluctant Reader

    November 13, 2009

    • BoyTwo here at my wonderful nanny job is a very intelligent seven-year-old who's picked up some bad habits along his way, especially a whiny laziness when asked to do anything beyond playing video games.  I've been working on changing that, making sure when I ask him to do something that he understands why, remembering to say please and thank you, and giving out a reward if he does something for ...

    • Oh come on, Red Room people--you want A favorite bookstore?  How can that be?  Bookstores are like chocolate, one for every mood. That being said, here are my favorites:Roski & Wallace in San Leandro (at least I think it was on the San Leandro side of E 14th St).  This store was amazing.  It was in a huge building that looked like old World War II quonset huts stuck together, or an ...
  • November ALREADY?

    November 2, 2009

    • Yesterday I came across KidTwo's copy of "Man Without a Country," by Kurt Vonnegut, and was reminded again how lucky we were to have had Kurt Vonnegut with us for so long.  That was a real treat among the stress and hassle of the move. The move progresses, in fits and starts.  Saturday I went back to the new apartment, where KidOne was waiting for a visit and to give me a hand.  We ...
  • Still Alive and Plugging Away

    October 28, 2009

    • Hello out there,Things are getting a little more settled, but only in relative terms--it's all still pretty messy.  We have the old apartment through Saturday, giving me tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday to get things cleared up there.  There are odds and ends to bring down to the new apartment, the carpeting to vacuum, and holes in the walls to repair.  KidThree isn't comfortable being there but ...

I do think our governator wishes all the sick and disabled would just drop dead or have the good graces to go into nursing homes where he can pretend they don't exist.  KidThree's disability benef

  • Hi Belle, What a comparison.

Hi Belle, What a comparison. No wonder Europeans and Canadians think we're idiots.
  • Deborah, Social Security

Deborah, Social Security does a lesser version of that with my KidThree--sending letters periodically and checking medical records to see if she is still paralyzed.  Maybe they know about some medica
