About Me

  • I was born and raised in New York City, the daughter of an artist mother and musician father. My childhood was spent at Lincoln Center, The Met Museum, Carnegie Hall, art galleries, jazz clubs, and Broadway theaters. I excelled at history, music, drama, languages, and, yes, writing.

  • One Bracelet

    February 8, 2009

    • It's arriving any day now. The sooner the better! My new bracelet, but not just any bracelet. Not just another trinket for my jewelry box destined to become tangled up with some $10 piece of junk I bought on a sidewalk stand in the East Village. No, no, this bracelet will be the elite star of my bling collection. (Oh . . . my . . . god. Did I just use the word “bling”? Now I’ll have to ...
  • Deconstructing the Doubters

    January 19, 2009

    •  Sometimes I think that people cling to cynicism for perverse and/or egotistical reasons. They might feel that as a doubter they seem smarter, intellectually superior to the foolish and hopeful believers. They are astute and rational, the believers are callow and naive. Tidy little classifications. Simplistic and inaccurate, but tidy. They may also be setting themselves up for the old “I told ...
  • The Support Group Walkout

    January 11, 2009

    • 5:45 on a Thursday and I was still nude, up on the modeling stand at the New York Studio School, curled up on paint-stained fabrics and old pillows that had seen better days, and surrounded by incongruous art school props (a plastic pear, a candelabra, and a mandolin. Huh?)  By 6:00 I was clothed, packed up, and ready to go out the door. Stanely, a fellow art model, asked me if I wanted to go ...
  • Still My Writing

    January 7, 2009

    • The mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of Alexander the Great. Greenwich Village and the urbanization of New York City. The political consequences of the Brown vs Board of Education Supreme Court decision. Horace Greeley's influence as a Civil War journalist. These are just a few research paper topics from my undergraduate and grad school days. Over the holiday break, I found them in ...
  • Initiation

    January 4, 2009

    • :stares down at water . . . inserts big toe . . . feels warmth . . . smiles: Greetings fellow Red Roomers, and greetings 2009! Just four days into the new year and my feeble resolution to "spend less time on the computer" has just flown out the window. There it goes, I see it, soaring off into the distance, getting smaller and smaller. Ciao, friend. It was fun while it lasted. But I ...

Comments I've Written

  • Oprah Obsession

Evelyn, I think your observations about the "Oprah phenomenon" are spot on. I've never understood the fawning, servile dependency of Oprah's "followers".
  • Picking through the Garbage

Elmaz, I cannot imagine it. I look at the same pictures and images, and read the same horrifying eyewitness accounts.

  • E-books

It's funny how some of us hold different standards for different art forms. I remember when mp3s and iTunes burst onto the scene, I was so excited! I thought it was greatest technology ever!
