About Me

    • After abandoning writing to become a scientist in college and medical school, I made a decision at forty to rediscover something of my missing twenties and began studying poetry.  My day job is physician--internal medicine and geriatrics(and known to make house calls).  My first book of poetry, One Breath, was recently published by Tebot Bach Press. It contains poems of my medical training and practice.

  • Poetry with Robert Sward, Roy Mash and The Marin Poetry Center

    August 31, 2009

    • I went to a poetry reading last week with a number of excellent poets.  My friend Robert Sward was reading from his upcoming book of dog poems. One of his first published poems was "Uncle Dog"--which is a classic. These are in the voices of various dogs and the people who"own" them--funny, wise, sexy, sad. It will be a great collection. Roy Mash who helps to organize the ...
  • Building Community At Squaw Valley

    August 10, 2009

    • I was on the wait list and when I was not called by the end of the first week in July figured I was going to have a week at home doing yardwork, vet visits and the dribbles of things that need doing when you are working full time and single. On my birthday, late in the day I got a call that there was an opening if I could make it on Saturday (48 hours away). I thought for about ten minutes and ...
  • Book Passage reading

    April 25, 2009

    • I had a fabulous reading at Book Passage April 4th. I wanted to launch my book there because that was where I took some of my first writing classes with Margaret Kaufman. I am an admirer of how the Petrocellis have built a community around their book store, keeping it afloat against a tide of chains and also raising the cultural bar for their competitors.  I think it is one of the main factors ...

  • My writing group

    March 2, 2009

    • About eight years ago I was invited to audition for a writing group which meets on the second and fourth Wednesday.  It has been an important part of my life.  Some members have come and others have found it too hard to get there or not the right mix of criticism for their work. Usually there are five of us around a large table with good lights, cups of tea and a varied assortment of nibbles.  ...

Comments I've Written

  • good advice

I am a poet and there is a rising trend toward self-publishing in poetry (probably because so very little money to be made at it).
  • I have been lucky to have

I have been lucky to have him as a teacher
  • Another happy camper

I was blessed with a last minute permission to attend and it was one of the best weeks I have had. The generosity of the writers and the quality of the work was a gift.
  • meatloaf

and since many meatloaf recipes use more than one sort of meat would it be meatsloaf? meatsloafs? meatsloaves? A conundrum! Also very entertaining.
  • iambics

"the futility of iambics"--great phrase. I will make a challenge of it.
