About Me

  • I'm Julie Hooker.  I love my name!  Today, an adorable sales associate in a fabulous new boutique, Albert Chloe, practically screamed when I said my name and handed her my credit card, "What a great name!"  It is a great name.  In Park City, I teach 8th and 9th grade English, write grants, and love my mountains.

  • What Memorial Day Means to Me . . .

    October 25, 2009

    •  My 8th and 9th graders have to write a 350 "essay" on this topic.  One of my classes asked, "Ms. Hooker, are you going to write this essay?"  So, here's mine. WHAT MEMORIAL DAY MEANS TO ME . . .I’m the product of Mormon immigrants.  My parents settled within ten minutes of the homes in which they were raised. Growing up, my Memorial Days were spent in the backseat ...
  • Doggie Paws: The Best Smell in the World

    October 24, 2009

    •   I woke to my favorite smell in the whole world.  Doggie paws!  During the night, Booker T. Washington, my cock-a-poo spoons with me.  At some point, he flipped over on his back and his right front paw twisted over his body into a yogic sage twist and pressed against my cheek.    I pulled him closer and inhaled.    Mmmmmm . . .doggy paw!   Last week, while ...
  • Next Time, I'm Buying Dyson & Bissell

    October 11, 2009

    •   When I asked my first husband, Dwight, “what stocks should I buy?”  He told me, “Stocks are bought and sold every single day.  Therefore, they are always perfectly priced.  It doesn’t matter.  When you’re selling, someone thinks you’re crazy and when you’re buying, you’re buying what someone doesn’t want.”   So, I started thinking about the products that ...
  • Studying Sedaris

    October 1, 2009

    • Remember when your 9th or 10th grade English teacher asked, “what do you think Phineus symbolizes in A Separate Peace? Or, “what do the witches in Macbeth symbolize?”  Then, you took her literally and responded with what you thought and heard, “wrong.” I remember that. Now, I’m a junior high school English teacher who hasn’t studied grammar since the 8th grade.  You see, my ...
  • CAUTION -- Can't Write

    September 27, 2009

    •   You’ve seen it in the movies.    I saw it when the avalanche came down Mt. Timpanogos at Sundance and wiped out cabins.    Police tape.    “CAUTION” printed in black repeats itself across a bright yellow background warning everyone to stay out.   When they roped it across the road at Sundance after the avalanche, my neighbors (Dan, Jeannie, Mary, ...

  • "Shaking like an arthritic mermaid"

That is a GREAT simile. I'd love to share it with my 8th and 9th graders. I'm teaching them about simile and metaphor this week. Your simile hooked me and your story kept me reading. Julie Hooker
  • Very relateable

This was great. . .last night, during the LSU/Florida game, someone was kind enough to explain how downs work. Go LSU. Oh, they lost. Football is it's own culture.
  • That's fabulous!

I love your sentence! Julie Hooker
