About Me

  • L. M. Quinn works and lives in L.A. Fiction is her passion, but she's also delved into book reviews and travel writing (in ELLE and Travel 50 & Beyond magazines).

Using her ensalada mixta (half Mexican, half Russian) background, she adds spice to her short stories and novels.

In March 2009, her short story "A Not So Clear Case of Murder" was included in the anthology Hit List: The Best of Latino Mystery (Arte Público Press).

  • When Publishing Happens

    July 8, 2010

    • Given that I write everyday, take writing classes, participate in a writers’ group, it seems only logical that publication should follow. Two pieces just selected for publication in anthologies out in 2011, in fact. One even pays. Of course, I forgot to mention the competition and the fact that the editors who read your work read subjectively. So, taking all of that into account, this is ...
  • Summer in L.A. – Who Wants to be Inside?

    June 22, 2010

    • It’s the perpetual call of the beautiful weather we have here in L.A. that blinds us from the consequences of giving into it. Days spent tanning on white-sand beaches or by sparkling water-filled swimming pools melt the mind and dull the senses. Of course we can take our laptops with us to write, but do we? Not always, I’ll wager. I’ve made an effort to avoid these two locations when ...
  • How to Love L. A.

    March 19, 2010

    • L. A. really has a lot to offer if you know where to look. I always think that the best way to see a city is with someone who lives there and loves it. Sure you can find things in guidebooks, but it’s the locals that know about Ciro’s killer tacos de papas and how to get tickets to the Getty Villa or a drag show at La Casita del Campo. A drive up Lake View off of Barham gives you a ...
  • Writing in L. A.

    March 2, 2010

    • Writing in L. A. Writing in L. A. has its own spin. Really it does. People here have been programmed to drive everywhere. Until recently, L. A. has had no metro or adequate bus transport available to those of us willing to use it. Now we have a metro but no infrastructure bus transport to get us to the metro stations without using our cars. Public transport works on the East Coast, so why can’t ...
  • Noir -- L.A.'s Dark Side

    January 29, 2010

    • Living and writing in L.A. includes reading too. Can’t call yourself a writer if you don’t read. My next Book Club reading includes two good works: L. A. Noir and Southland. I’m deep into both of them and highly recommend them for a look at L.A.’s dark side. It’s not, never has been, all sunshine and tans here. If you’ve read any L.A.-based writers that should have been made crystal ...

  • When a Reading/Book Signing Zings

I just did my last 2009 reading/book signing for Hit List: The Best of Latino Mystery at the Latino Festival of Books & Culture. It was one of those author/audience mixes that works on all levels.
