    I once lived in the United States and was shocked at how a health crisis can wipe a family out. I remember having to choose between giving a doctor $600 to repair my broken ankle or pay rent.

    I've heard when a company uses the free book give-a-way they are actually paying the author royalties. Royalties are budgeted into the marketing costs.
