About Me

  • Originally American, I have been building and managing golf clubs and resorts in Vietnam for over 16 years now. Ten years ago, I started writing a column for Sunday Vietnam News and just celebrated my 500th column. I also now write monthly columns for two local magazines as well.

While I am supposed to confine myself to golf, I have found that golf and life pretty much parallel, especially in that people need to accept responsibility for their own actions. Thus, I find a way to write about almost everything through the eyes of golf and get away with it...

  • Repentance is useless without an act of contrition

    September 9, 2009

    • Repent all ye sinners! It would be nice if it was that easy, but it would have no meaning whatsoever. In today's society, it has become almost automatic to say "sorry" out of politeness, even when you don;t feel sorry at all. Other people simply don't bother to ever admit mistakes (see Dick Cheney for reference) and simply lie and deny until accept as a pseudo-truism.The fact is that ...
  • Anxiety by the Dashboard light...

    January 25, 2009

    January 24, 2009

    • TET IS ALSO A TIME FOR REFLECTIONThere is something about the Lunar New Year celebration in Vietnam (Tet) which inspires the urge to reflect on the past year, your life in general and what you hope for in the coming year. With the exception of the Western New Year, I suspect most cultural / religious new year celebrations inspire the same feelings. For example, while I am not promoting any one ...
  • Vietnamese Tet 2009 through the eyes of a long-term Expat...

    January 24, 2009

    • Ah yes, another Tet [Lunar New Year] is upon us. I can tell simply by the amount of frantic shopping going on as people search for the best bargains, the best foods and, of course, the best banh chung [square glutinous rice cake]…No, despite what you think, I will leave the poor Banh Chung alone this year and refrain from referring to it as a substance with the atomic weight of a small nuclear ...
  • Another Tet holiday in Vietnam

    January 24, 2009

    • As I drive around Haø Noäi two days before Teát, it seems that the annual pilgrimage has already begun as the roads are filled with families on their motorbikes, sometimes four to a bike, and loaded with travel bags. There is something both tragic and yet comforting in the scene of a son in front, the father driving, a younger child sandwiched in between the father and the mother riding ...
