Review Excerpt:

Misiroglu says the need to respond to a paying market is one of the strengths of commercially driven art.

"Heroes' creators are also products of their time, so it's important to see how women were written, and how historical issues were handled. Now we're seeing characters in comics look like real people. Look at Oracle, a paraplegic who is an essential character in Batman's universe as an information broker. There's also Professor X and Daredevil, both of whom have disabilities. We see gays and gay issues, bisexuality and gender issues with Northstar, who's a major hero. The comics characters and what comics heroes are doing reflects what's happening in the real world."
