"I always connect the South with a diamond," writes David Banner, setitng off the forward to Tamara Palmer's 24-karat exploration of Southern hip-hop. Palmer, a former Urb magazine editor and DJ, connects her Mason-Dixon tour with a lil' mixtape science. Lil Jon, Luther Campbell, Jazze Pha, 8Ball and MJG, Too $hort and others turn up on the wild ride, speling out the glistening truth on just how the South won.
In one chapter, Ludacris' flow inspires Palmer's ode to Southern lyricism. Then, things get grimy in Atlanta's strip clubs as the Ying Yang Twins show how dancers double as tastemakers for the next crunk jam. Palmer then brings 'em out to where the Bible Belt meets custom grills, chatting with Cee-Lo about how they found religion. Like buttery hot cornbread, Palmer is straight up, with a little sauce on the side.
