So you want to discover Michelangelo? Well, why not go to Italy with someone who wrote a book about him, his life and his art.
That's what we did. And what a trip it was.
Let's start from the beginning. Angela Nickerson, our guide, is a member of the ministry team at St. John's Lutheran Church in midtown Sacramento. She also is the author of "A Journey Into Michelangelo's Rome," which was released in March. The book represents, in Nickerson's words, "a fusion of art, literature, spirituality, history and travel."
And I can say the same for our journey. We started in Florence – Michelangelo Buonarroti's birthplace, on March 6, 1475 – the city where he was trained and was given his first commissions. The trip ended almost two weeks later with a walk up the Appian Way outside Rome.
In between, we discovered Michelangelo and a whole lot more.
