Review Excerpt:

It was March 2001 when the young graduate from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., walked into the Sistine Chapel in Rome. “I was completely overwhelmed by the beauty and the sheer scale of Michelangelo’s work,” Angela Nickerson said. “And I never wanted to leave.”

Of course, like all visitors, she had to leave. But then she did the next best thing: She wrote a book about the legendary artist, A Journey into Michelangelo’s Rome (Roaring Forties Press, 2008).

Nickerson, who also was a member of St. Olaf’s choir, is director of congregational discipleship at St. John Lutheran Church, Sacramento, Calif.

“When I married a Roman in 1998,” Nickerson writes in her book, “I had no idea I was marrying a city. But that is indeed what happened.” Her husband is an architect and also a St. Olaf graduate. Before joining St. John’s staff, Nickerson taught English for eight years and created a class on the Bible as literature.
