Synopsis:

Affirmative Action: Racial Preference in Black and White provides a comprehensive defense of affirmative action programs, especially in higher education, and argues that such efforts are indispensable for the diminution and eradication of institutional racism and white racial privilege. Unlike most of the current defenses of affirmative action, which seek to defend such programs because of the benefits of "diversity," Wise's book argues that the main reason for the continuation of affirmative action is the same as it was thirty years ago: the need to counterbalance institutionalized racial preference for whites (white affirmative action, if you will). Wise presents compelling evidence of ongoing white privilege, and then carefully dissects all of the conservative critiques of affirmative action, in this fact-filled but easy to digest volume.

Kimberle Crenshaw, professor of law at Columbia University and UCLA, says:

“Wise’s insightful defense of affirmative action flips the script on the so-called ‘racial preference’ debate. Not only does he respond effectively to the deceptive arguments of the right, but he also proves that every day is affirmative action day for (whites) in America. Until that reality is altered, we must fight the ongoing assault on civil rights. This book will make that effort easier.”

In reviewing the book, Education Review notes: “Wise, does a superb job of making his point and then providing ample evidence, both legal and statistical, to support it...” (April 29, 2006)

And the Journal of Higher Education says: “Wise fully delivers (by merging scholarship with politically engaged criticism in a short and accessibly written manner)...this book is forceful, relentless, and convincing.” (Sept/Oct 2006)
