Book Excerpt:
David's honey coated hand rises to his high-chiseled cheeks, wiping the tears away. The salt from his tears burn his eyes like a freshly peeled onion. His bowed curly head sways hypnotically to the tune of "A Family Reunion," playing in the background, while as his red-clay-covered fingertips quiver while scrolling Big Lonnie, Luther and Christian's names across the banner bearing his family tree.
Standing alone just in the distance, Lisa, David's wife, hollers out the sounds of mourning when David steps to the right, revealing the names he has scrawled. Fainting like someone touched by the Holy Spirit, Lisa's limp body falls to the floor.
Turning quickly, bending over to attend to his wife, David's bloodshot eyes scan the crowd. The faces are as stern as headstones in a graveyard. Briefly pausing at the sight out of the corner of his eye, he sees Little Lonnie in the doorway in a trancelike state.
Feeling the weight of David's stare, Little Lonnie shifts her head slightly, nervously smiling as a warm tear glides down her cheek. As the second, third and fourth tears drizzle from her eyes; Little Lonnie blinks rapidly and turns her head away.
David trembles from the eruption of emotions within as he crouches by Lisa's side, rocking her slowly, drifting like a summer breeze. Glaring into the distance like one facing death, he recalls…
