Synopsis:

A guide to the foods of the coastal Pacific Northwest during a period in my life when my economic outlook was somewhat subdued and when my wive and I ate well because of friends who introduced as to -- and often supplied us with -- local foods from the bay, from the foothills and the Cascade Mountains, and from their gardens.

This book has long been out of print (though it is still available from amazon.com) but it is once again timely, as the local economy is taking a nosedive. It needs to be updated, of course, because some local resources -- salmon, rockfish, et al. -- are not as plentiful as they were two decades ago, while others (Most notably cheeses, fruits, garden vegetables, and shellfish are now more plentiful).

Book Excerpt:

Whenever the economy of the Pacific Northwest has faltered, its hungry residents -- with the possible exception of metropolitan urbanites -- have ever been quick to turn to the profusion of foods from field, garden, forest, river, lake, and seashore. Oysters, clams, crabs, and fish have been ready companions to the copious amounts of vegetables grown in kitchen gardens and window boxes. Best of all, Northwesterners have always shared their culinary bounty with their less fortunate neighbors.
