Book Excerpt:

"Not that any decent man would have you now! Not that any DECENT man would have you now! "

Her brother's final word to her echoed through Kate's head, getting louder with each repetition until she thought she would lose her mind. Grasping her head tightly with both hands, she squeezed with all her strength in an effort to block out the hateful words. Her mind struggled to take in the enormity of her downfall. Her world was crumbling around her again, only this time there would be no end to hostilities. There would be no truce declared. She would spend the rest of her life at war with the class she had been born into, never able to call a cease-fire.

Retreating to the sanctuary of her childhood bedroom, she took refuge in the blessed arms of sleep. In that place there was not struggle, no horror, no shame -- only a deep, dark, velvety peace that she longed for with all her soul. Then, this last solace deserted her. She could sleep no more. She cried endlessly. George had turned his back on his own flesh and blood and sided with an outsider. A foreboding filled her. George had been the first to turn on her. Who would be next?
