Synopsis:
The 14 short stories collected in the book, all inspired by real-life events, are about people caught in the unsettling drama of a fast-changing China, about the average person who thrusts forward in life, stubbornly, despite the bewilderment, the setbacks, and sometimes, the stunning blows. Witty, poignant, absurd, and shocking, the stories were originally written in English and have already been published in the United States in a collection titled Red Guard Fantasies and Other Stories. This newly prepared English Chinese bilingual edition is for those brave souls who feel linguistically equipped for a new venture into a myriad world of jaded entrepreneurs, overzealous cops, karaoke fanatics, dog lovers (and haters), liberated coeds, and frustrated urbanites who move in and out of China's colorful neon-lit cites and dusty rural villages, transitioning from one world to the other. The reward for this venture should be richer than deepened understanding of China, its people, and long and dynamic culture.

Who did they think they were? Cindy Crawford, Vanessa Williams, or whoever the world’s super-most super model might be, promenading down the Fifth Avenue in Manhattan or the Champs-Elysées in Paris?Besides, there were millions of humans, like those skinny, bony, big-headed kids in Somalia and Sudan he had seen on TV, who had to suffer the pangs of hunger everyday. These women could certainly use a good lecture to knock some human sense into their airy heads, he thought....Topics/Categories:
