A teacher told young John Levy to get a job in the post office so that he would have security in life. Thankfully for the history of American entertainment, he wanted more. Born in 1912, John Levy was a first-rate bassist with Erroll Garner, Billie Holiday, George Shearing, and others. In 1951, he put down his bass to become a full-time manager and soon became the top black talent manager in popular and jazz music. His client roster included more than 85 artists, many of them true jazz legends: Sarah Vaughan, Joe Williams, Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley, Wes Montgomery, Ahmad Jamal, Ramsey Lewis...
