In the hottest part of July, when I saw my parents in the parked Chevy talking with the windows rolled up, I realized two things: that I had never seen them argue before and had just discovered the reason why. I couldn’t see their features, but through the glare of the front windshield my mother’s hands fluttered like moths, uncharacteristically animated. As the only boy in a Korean household I had been charged from birth with the future duty of caring for my parents. My mother reminded me of this often, in a tone that showed pride and affection, so I didn’t mind the responsibility. Not only had it set me apart from my sisters, it had made me alert to a number of terse silences between my parents.
