Synopsis:

An extensive tour of Oregon vineyards and wineries and visits to wine country villages and towns.

Book Excerpt:

Reustle-Prayer Rock Vineyards.

As you drive through dense woods on your way to this winery, you may wonder if you've taken a wrong turn. Then the road enters a wide valley where the sun pours down onto gentle vineyard slopes and you know you've come to the right place. The winery is clear on the other side of the valley but it is worth the  drive.

The vineyards were planted in 2001, and winemaking began in 2004 using only fruit grown in the Prayer Rock Vineyards. Shortly after you leave the entrance woods, you'll see a sign directing you to the Prayer Rock from which the winery takes its name. The rock is a boulder at the top of vineyards near the irrigation controls for the vines. Often, when winemaker/owner Stephen Reustle hiked to the top of the ridge to turn on the water, he took his son along. Since he wanted to teach his son to pray, he said a prayer while they took a rest on the rock before returning to the winery. One day, Reustle was in a rush and did not pause to rest. But his son stopped him, asking why they did not pray at the "Prayer Rock."  That's how the rock, the vineyard, and the winery got their name.
