Ossuary

Ossuary

Synopsis:

Ossuary is a poetic tribute to the bone panels, bone scrolls and other art of artist, writer and publisher Erzebet YellowBoy. The collection centers upon the themes of decay and transformation in much the same way Yellowboy’s work does. Some draw upon world myth and fairy tale. Additionally Ossuary seeks to explore the natural world from which the artist draws inspiration – the season’s cycles, nature’s mystery and, of course, the inevitability of death and the transforming process of decay. In Ossuary, the reader will find such things as the wizened beauty of an old woman tending her garden, descents through the grave’s loamy underworld, and the phoenix-like bursting of a bush into flame.

Ossuary is not only a close collaboration between two artists, it is also an example of interstitial art – hybrid art which crosses the lines between different mediums and draws upon elements of each. It is ultimately an exploration into the beauty of death, a life process that has for too long been viewed with suspicion and terror in the West.

Book Excerpt:

Simple Things

Such simple things,

a bone, a nerve,

a snail shell cochlea,

a red heart like a leaf

make a body.

So simply does it move:

a step, a stop,

a look, a hesitation,

a sinew and skin sweep

along its path.

Such simple things,

a cough, an ague,

a crab-claw tumor,

a cell-spreading virus

make an end.

So simply does it happen:

a step, a stumble,

a tremor, a blink,

a sighing into air

from this bright promontory.
