The Dim Sum of All Things
Synopsis:
The Dim Sum of All Things is about a third-generation Chinese-American receptionist whose parents’ assimilation efforts have succeeded in convincing her she is not Chinese at all. The protagonist denies her affinity for Peking duck, mooncakes, and Hello Kitty toys, occasionally gleaning tidbits of Chinese wisdom by watching re-runs of Antiques Roadshow. She lives with her grandmother who would be horrified to know that her granddaughter dreams of a white devil unlocking the chink in her chastity belt; nonetheless, the protagonist yearns for true love with the cute white guy in her politically correct office, fearing only that the stench of her granny’s tiger balm will prematurely deflate his boner. How, you may ask, does this novel differ from an oeuvre d’Amy Tan or Maxine Hong Kingston? The Dim Sum of All Things is aimed at a younger generation, and combines the best qualities of The Joy Luck Club with Bridget Jones’s Diary. Movie-wise, think Mulan meets Clueless. Also, my story includes an oral sex scene involving Hostess Twinkies and Apocalypse Now which provides a charming contrast to the heartwarming Return-to-China finale.
