Book Excerpt:

It is a pleasure to be happy. Yet, pleasure is not the same thing as happiness. Pleasure is temporary and usually based on an outside circumstance. Happiness, on the other hand, is a state of mind. The Webster Dictionary defines it as “a state of well being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.” According to Mahatma Gandhi, “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”

As we discussed in the last chapter, I define happiness as being without fear; having that sense of well being that comes from being so at ease with who you are that you are excited about how you are living your life. This is not about the kind of happiness that shows up for one manic moment then quickly disappears. Nor is it everlasting giddiness, although you may have more of that than you do now. It is an underlying sense of peace, confidence, contentment and an appreciation of life, the way it is in this moment and the way it can be in the future. I believe it is the ultimate anti-aging solution!

Being Happy is Being Successful

I really believe that if you are happy you are successful. Note that I said you are successful when you are happy; not you are happy when you are successful. Albert Sweitzer agreed with me, “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.”

Being happy is a very personal thing. What makes one of us happy might not make another person happy. That is what makes the interesting tapestry of life – our unique overlapping individualities. We may find that our journey to happiness takes us places we might not have considered. Let’s be open to new ideas on how we can reach our desired destination. Let’s not be our “own worst enemy” by our letting our preconceived notions or expectation of perfection get in the way. If we find the path we’ve chosen takes us in a direction that doesn’t fully support us, know while in route we have the freedom to make adjustments and changes. Getting to the peak of the mountain may require detours; however, the destination remains the same. We can find happiness all along the way.
