The World to Come
Synopsis:
Most people believe that death is not the end. While few will baldly assert that death leads always to non-existence, there are some like Isaac Asimov, who worried that "the boredom of heaven would be even worse" than hell. In some deep place, I think many people fear that the afterlife will be as in the cartoons, a place where we have wings and float on clouds playing harps for time unending with purposelessness.
What is the World to Come? Why does Jewish tradition use this term for the afterlife? Why not talk about going to heaven or the great beyond? The World to Come is a rich picture of an afterlife filled with grass and hills and rivers and trees, a renewed earth beginning in the days of Messiah. The World to Come is the Bible and Jewish tradition, as well as Christian thought, bearing on the nature of life after death.
